Regular dental cleanings are the first line of defense against mild gum disease (gingivitis), which can progress to more advanced and aggressive gum disease (periodontitis).
Your cleaning visit generally includes the following elements:
- Update on your health history
- Teeth scaling and polishing
- At recommended intervals:
- Periodontal charting
- X-rays
- Examination with Dr. Haley
- Optional services such as fluoride treatment are also highly recommended
Regular cleanings address plaque and calculus, or bacterial deposits, that occur above the gum line, as well as just below (1-3mm below) the gum line. These destructive deposits are removed with a combination of ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments.
