Cosmetic bonding is the process of applying a tooth-colored composite material to improve the appearance of a tooth.
This process improves the aesthetics of your smile while allowing the tooth to maintain a natural appearance. In order to bond a tooth, tooth-colored material is added to the tooth to build it up.
Bonding is often used to:
- Correct the shape of a chipped, worn, or malformed tooth
- Remove and replace the stained area of a tooth that will not respond to less invasive treatments like whitening or resin infiltration
Advantages of bonding over other treatments include:
- Bonding can generally be done at a lower cost compared to porcelain veneers due to decreased chair time and lower lab costs
- Bonding usually can be done in a single visit, whereas veneers generally take 2 visits
- Bonding involves less removal of otherwise healthy tooth structure compared to veneers
Disadvantages of bonding
- Generally has more esthetic limitations than porcelain restorations like veneers or crowns
- More prone to staining compared to porcelain restorations, especially from consumption of coffee, teas, tobacco, and other staining foods
- Less durable (less wear-resistant) compared to porcelain
