There are two types of oral evaluations, the comprehensive oral evaluation and the periodic oral evaluation
Periodic oral evaluation
This evaluation is your “check up”, which is performed on patients who have been regular with the office, and have had no major medical or dental changes
Comprehensive Oral Evaluation
This evaluation is performed at your initial visit with us, or may be performed if you have been absent for more than 2 years, or may be performed if you have had major medical or dental changes
Both exams involve oral cancer screening, dental x-rays when appropriate, diagnosis of teeth and gum conditions, treatment options, and referrals to specialists as needed.
During a comprehensive dental exam, your provider will:
- Ask about your medical history and status
- Ask about medications you take
- Perform diagnostic x-rays using low-radiation digital imaging
- Perform an oral cancer screening – this involves a throughout inspection of oral tissues for any changes, and often includes external areas such as below the jaw and around the neck
- Check for signs of tooth decay, failing restorations, or periodontal disease
- Discuss proper home care and oral hygiene
Your provider may also:
- Evaluate your jaw joints for proper function
- Evaluate your occlusion (bite)
- Take an impression to create a replica of your teeth (study models)
